Nineveh was the great city of the Assyrian Empire, located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River in present-day northern Iraq. Its inhabitants’ response to Jonah’s warning—believing God, fasting, and humbling themselves—shows that God’s call to repentance extended even to Israel’s feared Gentile enemy.
