Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.

Nineveh was the great Assyrian city to which Jonah had preached God’s warning; after its people repented, God spared it. Jonah sat east of the city, waiting to see whether judgment might still fall, revealing his anger at God’s mercy toward Israel’s enemies.
