Yahweh God prepared a vine, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.

Nineveh was the great Assyrian city to which God sent Jonah to proclaim judgment, and whose people repented. In this passage Jonah sits east of the city, displeased at God’s mercy, while the plant’s shade exposes his misplaced concern compared with God’s compassion for Nineveh.
