Nineveh was the great Assyrian city on the Tigris River in Mesopotamia, east of Israel. Its repentance after Jonah’s preaching and God’s mercy toward it provoke Jonah’s anger here, exposing the contrast between his concern for a plant and God’s compassion for a populous city.
