Gibeon was a major Canaanite city in the central hill country, near Jerusalem; its treaty with Israel alarmed Jerusalem’s king because it gave Israel a strategic foothold. The other places mark the surrounding Canaanite regions and cities involved in Joshua’s southern campaign, showing the wider political threat to Israel’s advance.
