Hebron, in the hill country of Canaan, was the city Caleb received after Israel crossed the Jordan and camped at Gilgal, fulfilling the promise made when he spied the land from Kadesh-barnea. Its earlier name, Kiriath-arba, recalls the Anakite stronghold Caleb overcame.
