Kadesh-barnea was Israel’s wilderness staging point south of Canaan, from which Moses sent Caleb to spy out the land; Canaan was the promised land west of the Jordan. Gilgal, near the Jordan crossing, was Israel’s later camp in Canaan, while Hebron was the hill-country inheritance Caleb sought.
