Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and lay there.

Shittim was Israel’s last encampment east of the Jordan, in Moab, from which Joshua sent spies westward. Jericho, a fortified Canaanite city just beyond the Jordan, guarded Israel’s entry into the land promised after the exodus from Egypt.
