For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

Egypt was the land from which the LORD delivered Israel, while Shittim lay east of the Jordan, where Israel camped before entering Canaan. The Jordan formed the boundary into the land, and Jericho was the fortified city nearby whose inhabitants had heard of God’s mighty acts and feared Israel’s advance.
