Peor was the site east of the Jordan where Israel’s idolatry brought divine judgment (Num. 25). Gilead and Bashan lay east of the Jordan, while Canaan and Shiloh were west of it; the western tribes fear that an altar in Gilead could repeat Peor’s covenant-breaking rebellion.
