Ai was a Canaanite town west of the Jordan near Bethel, where Israel’s defeat exposed Achan’s sin after Jericho’s fall; Shinar was the Mesopotamian region from which he had taken a forbidden garment. The Valley of Achor, likely near Ai, became the place of Achan’s judgment and a lasting witness to God’s holy justice.
