Bethlehem was the Levite’s starting point in Judah; Jebus (Jerusalem) was a nearby Jebusite city, while Gibeah and Ramah were Israelite towns in Benjamin. In seeking lodging at Gibeah or Ramah rather than Jebus, the travelers’ choice sets the scene for Israel’s later covenantal and moral collapse.
