Zion, the hill and theological name for Jerusalem, was Judah’s covenant center and the site of the temple. Edom lay southeast of Judah; its rejoicing over Jerusalem’s fall highlighted the shame of Zion’s judgment, which Lamentations says surpassed Sodom’s sudden overthrow.
