Nineveh was the great Assyrian city to which Jonah preached, and its people repented at his message; the South refers to the queen of Sheba, who came from Arabia to hear Solomon’s wisdom. Jesus contrasts their responsive faith with his generation’s rejection of one greater than Jonah and Solomon.
