Jerusalem was the religious center of Judea, the Roman province surrounding it, and its temple was where Jesus taught publicly each day. The Mount of Olives, just east of Jerusalem across the Kidron Valley, provided a customary place for him to spend the nights during his final days before the crucifixion.
