Bethany and Bethphage were villages on or near the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, just east of Jerusalem. Their proximity marks Jesus’ deliberate approach to Jerusalem from the east, setting the scene for his public entry into the city where his messianic mission would reach its climax.
