Bethany and Bethphage were villages on the eastern side of the Mount of Olives, just outside Jerusalem, where Jesus was staying and from which he entered the city during Passover week. His departure from Bethany toward Jerusalem frames the fig tree incident as part of his approaching confrontation with the temple and its fruitless leadership.
