Bethsaida was a fishing village near the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus had ministered and performed miracles; Galilee was the broader northern region of his public ministry. Caesarea Philippi, farther north near pagan shrines, forms the setting in which Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah, marking a decisive turning point in Mark’s account.
