Babylon was the imperial city in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) whose conquest of Judah led to the Jewish exile. In Matthew’s genealogy, the exile to Babylon marks a major break in David’s royal line, yet the family line continues through Shealtiel and Zerubbabel toward the Messiah.
