Babylon was the Mesopotamian empire and city to which Judah’s people were exiled after Jerusalem’s fall in 586 BC. Though not named directly in this verse, the post-exilic genealogy including Zerubbabel shows that Jesus’ royal line continued through the judgment of exile and God’s preserving covenant
