Babylon was the Mesopotamian empire centered in present-day Iraq that conquered Judah and exiled many Jews in 586 BC. In Matthew’s genealogy, the Babylonian exile marks a major turning point: Jesus descends from David’s royal line even after Judah’s judgment and displacement.
