Babylon was the major city of the Neo-Babylonian Empire in Mesopotamia, whose conquest of Judah led to the Jewish exile. Though not named in verse 21 itself, the exile appears in Matthew’s preceding genealogy, showing that Jesus’ birth fulfills God’s saving purposes through Israel’s troubled history.
