Babylon was the major Mesopotamian empire centered in present-day Iraq that conquered Judah and deported many Jews in 586 BC. Though not named in verse 25 itself, its mention in Matthew’s genealogy marks the exile through which God preserved the Davidic line culminating in Jesus’ birth.
