Nineveh was the great Assyrian city whose people repented at Jonah’s preaching, while “the South” refers to the queen of Sheba, likely from Arabia, who came to hear Solomon’s wisdom. Jesus uses both Gentile examples to condemn his hearers’ refusal to respond to one greater than Jonah and Solomon.
