Matthew 16:15-19

[15] He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" [16] Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." [17] Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. [19] I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will be released in heaven."

Caesarea Philippi, near the headwaters of the Jordan River in the far north of Galilee, was the setting for Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Messiah and for Jesus’ promise concerning his church. Jerusalem, though not named in these verses, is the city toward which Jesus’ mission leads, culminating in his death and resurrection.
