Caesarea Philippi, near the northern sources of the Jordan River, was a Gentile-influenced city where Peter confessed Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God. Jerusalem, though not named in verse 16 itself, is the city toward which Jesus soon turns to suffer, die, and rise, defining the Messiah’s mission.
