“Beyond the River” was the Persian province west of the Euphrates, through which Nehemiah traveled under royal protection to Jerusalem. The Valley, Dung, and Fountain Gates marked Jerusalem’s vulnerable southern and western perimeter near the Kidron Valley and Siloam, where Nehemiah later inspected the ruined defenses before rebuilding
