Jerusalem was the Judean city whose walls Nehemiah was rebuilding; Samaria lay north of Judah and was associated with Sanballat’s opposition. Ashdod, a Philistine city west of Jerusalem, joined the surrounding opponents, showing that threats came from several directions and prompting prayerful vigilance.
