So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, everyone on the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

The Ephraim Gate was likely on Jerusalem’s northern wall, while the Water Gate stood near the eastern side by the Gihon spring; both were public areas within or beside the rebuilt city. In this Feast of Booths observance, the people spread their shelters across Jerusalem, showing covenant-wide participation in God’s commanded worship.
