Israel’s victory over Sihon gave it territory east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge north to the Jabbok River; Ammon lay beyond the Jabbok and was not taken because its border was fortified. The surrounding places mark Israel’s wilderness route from Egypt and Edom through Moab toward Bashan and the promised land.
