Shittim, in the plains of Moab east of the Jordan near Jericho, was Israel’s final camp before entering Canaan. There Israel was drawn into Moabite and Midianite-associated worship of Baal of Peor, making the killing of Zimri and the Midianite woman Cozbi central to the passage’s judgment against covenant unfaithfulness.
