Babylon was the Mesopotamian empire that destroyed Jerusalem and deported many Judeans; there, captors mocked the exiles by demanding songs of Zion, Jerusalem’s holy hill and the center of Israel’s worship. Edom, Judah’s southeastern neighbor, is remembered later in the psalm for rejoicing in Jerusalem’s fall.
