Patmos was a small Aegean island where John was exiled “because of the word of God”; Asia was the Roman province in western Asia Minor containing the seven churches named. Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea were cities receiving Revelation’s pastoral message amid Roman power and local pressures.
