Bethlehem was a town in Judah, Israel’s covenant land, while Moab lay east of the Dead Sea and was often hostile to Israel. Elimelech’s family had gone from Bethlehem to Moab because of famine; there, after Elimelech’s death, Naomi was left widowed in a foreign land.
