Bethlehem was a small Judean town, Naomi’s ancestral home, where she and Ruth had returned after famine and bereavement. Moab, east of the Dead Sea, was Ruth’s homeland; her move from Moab to Bethlehem highlights her attachment to Naomi and sets the scene for her gleaning in Israel.
