Bible Text

Then said Boaz, What day you buy the field of the hand of Naomi, you must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance.

Bethlehem was the Judean town where Boaz conducted the redemption transaction; Ephrathah was its older regional name, underscoring Ruth’s incorporation into an established Israelite family line. Moab, east of the Dead Sea, was Ruth’s homeland, making her marriage to Mahlon and Boaz’s duty to preserve the dead man’s name especially significant.
