The Bible teaches that enslaving habits and desires are to be resisted through God’s grace, for Christ frees His people to live in willing obedience. Though temptation is real, God provides a way of endurance and calls believers to submit to Him and resist the devil (1 Corinthians 10:13; James 4:7). Christians must not be mastered by anything but Christ (1 Corinthians 6:12), watching and praying against the flesh (Matthew 26:41). In the gospel, grace trains us to renounce ungodliness and to put on the Lord Jesus Christ (Titus 2:11-12; Romans 13:14). Freedom is not self-reliance, but the liberating power of the Son, received by faith and pursued in repentance.
