The Bible presents altars as appointed places of worship, sacrifice, thanksgiving, and covenant remembrance, pointing ultimately to reconciliation with God through His provision. Noah built an altar after the flood, responding to God’s mercy with sacrifice (Genesis 8:2). The patriarchs repeatedly built altars where God appeared, called on His name, and renewed His promises: Abraham at Shechem, Bethel, and Hebron, Isaac at Beersheba, and Jacob at Bethel (Genesis 12:7-8; 13:18; 26:25; 35:1-7). Abraham’s altar on Moriah especially displays God’s gracious provision of a substitute (Genesis 22:9). Israel also used altars to remember the Lord’s victory and covenant (Exodus 17:15; 24:4). These signs anticipate Christ, whose once-for-all sacrifice fulfills what altar offerings foreshadowed.
