What does the Bible say about being a light?

Bible Topic · WEB

The Bible teaches that believers, united to Christ the true Light, are called to reflect His holiness, truth, and mercy before a darkened world so that God receives the glory. Jesus declares in Matthew 5:14-16 that His disciples are the light of the world, whose visible good works should lead others to praise their Father in heaven. John 8:12 shows that Christ Himself is the Light, so our witness is dependent upon following Him rather than displaying our own righteousness. Ephesians 5:8 calls Christians to walk as children of light, while 1 Peter 2:9 says God has brought His people from darkness to proclaim His excellencies. God's Word guides this life of faithful witness, as Psalm 119:105 teaches.
