What does the Bible say about breaking promises?

Bible Topic · WEB

The Bible teaches that breaking lawful promises is a serious sin, because God calls his people to speak truthfully and faithfully reflect his own unchanging character. Numbers 30:2 and Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 urge believers to fulfill vows rather than make them carelessly. Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:33-37 and James 5:12 that ordinary speech should be so honest that a simple yes or no is trustworthy. God himself does not alter his covenant or lie, as Psalms 89:34 and Numbers 23:19 declare. Yet those who have failed may confess their sin, seek forgiveness through Christ, make restitution where possible, and depend on the Spirit to grow in integrity.
