What does the Bible say about elder abuse?

Bible Topic · WEB

The Bible condemns mistreatment or neglect of older people and calls God’s people to honor, protect, and provide for those in their care. Scripture particularly requires families to meet the needs of their relatives, warning in 1 Timothy 5:8 against abandoning this duty. Jesus teaches in Matthew 25:42-45 that neglecting vulnerable people is a serious sin against him. While Hebrews 13:17 calls believers to respect faithful spiritual leaders, it never excuses abuse or demands submission to sin; all authority remains accountable to God. The fruit of the Spirit, including love, kindness, gentleness, and self-control, should mark Christian homes and churches (Galatians 5:22-23).
