What does the Bible say about falsehood?

Bible Topic · WEB

The Bible teaches that falsehood is sin against God and neighbor, while truthfulness reflects God’s holy character and preserves justice, trust, and peace. The ninth commandment forbids bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16), and Exodus 23:1 warns against spreading false reports or joining deceitful testimony. Leviticus condemns lying, fraud, false oaths, and slander, calling offenders to repentance and restitution where harm has been done (Leviticus 6:2-7; 19:11-16). Job rejects deceitful speech and exposes empty comfort offered through lies (Job 13:4; 27:4). Believers therefore should speak truth with humility, refuse gossip and manipulation, confess sin honestly, and trust the Lord who judges righteously.
