The Bible teaches that wrongdoing may rightly bring penalties, but its aim is justice, restitution, repentance, and restored fellowship with God and neighbor. Exodus 22:1, 4, and 7-9 require thieves and those entrusted with another's property to make repayment, often beyond the original loss. Leviticus 5:15-16 and 6:5-6 likewise join restitution with a sacrificial offering, showing that sin is both an offense against people and against the Lord. Proverbs 6:30-31 recognizes the pressure of need yet still holds theft accountable.
