The Bible teaches that God freely forgives sins through Jesus Christ when sinners repent and trust in him, and he calls his forgiven people to forgive one another. First John 1:9 assures believers that God is faithful and just to cleanse those who confess, because Christ has borne sin’s penalty. Acts 2:38 and Acts 3:19 join repentance with the promise of forgiveness and renewal. Hebrews 10:17 celebrates God’s covenant mercy: he remembers his people’s sins no more. Christians are therefore to put away bitterness and forgive as God forgave them in Christ, as Ephesians 4:32 and Colossians 3:13 teach.
