What does the Bible say about mentoring?

The Bible teaches that believers should humbly grow in wisdom and godliness through faithful relationships in which mature Christians instruct, encourage, correct, and model obedience to Christ. Proverbs 27:17 pictures this mutual sharpening, while Proverbs 13:20 urges walking with the wise. God especially calls older believers to pass on sound faith to those following them, as Titus 2:3-5 and Psalm 145:4 show. Paul tells Timothy to entrust gospel truth to reliable people who can teach others also (2 Timothy 2:2). Such guidance is not mere self-improvement: leaders are to serve humbly under Christ, and all believers are to imitate faithful examples only as they imitate Him (1 Peter 5:1-5; 1 Corinthians 11:1).
