What does the Bible say about paying back what you owe?

The Bible teaches that God calls us to deal honestly with our obligations, repay what we owe when able, and show mercy to those in need. Psalm 37:21 contrasts the wicked borrower who does not repay with the righteous who are generous, while Romans 13:7-10 commands believers to render what is due and fulfill the law through love. Proverbs 6:1-5 warns against rash financial pledges, and Luke 16:1-31 urges faithful stewardship rather than slavery to money. Yet Christ also teaches generous mercy toward borrowers in Luke 6:34-36, and Proverbs 19:17 says kindness to the poor is lending to the Lord. Contentment and trust in God’s provision should govern our finances.
