The Bible teaches that God reveals his will through true prophets, supremely and finally through Jesus Christ, while commanding his people to test every prophetic claim by his Word. Deuteronomy 18:15 and 18:18 promise a prophet like Moses, fulfilled in Christ, who speaks God’s authoritative word and brings salvation to his people. Deuteronomy 18:20-22 warns that false prophets who speak presumptuously or in another god’s name must not be trusted; their failed predictions expose them. Yet miraculous claims alone are not enough, for 1 John 4:1 calls believers to test the spirits by confessing the true Christ. God’s church therefore receives Scripture as the sure standard for discernment.
