The Bible presents Purim as a yearly remembrance of God’s providential deliverance of the Jewish people from destruction, calling them to grateful celebration, generosity, and remembrance. In Esther 9:20-32, Mordecai and Queen Esther establish the feast to commemorate the reversal of Haman’s evil plot, when sorrow was turned to gladness and danger to victory.
