What does the Bible say about being yourself?

The Bible calls us to live truthfully before God, receiving our identity as his creatures and using our distinct gifts for his glory rather than seeking approval from others. God looks on the heart, not outward appearance (1 Samuel 16:7), and Psalm 139:14-16 praises his wise, personal workmanship in forming each life. Yet being ourselves is not self-invention or following every desire; Romans 12:2 calls believers to be renewed in mind and conformed to God’s will. In Christ, we are God’s workmanship, created for good works (Ephesians 2:10), serving humbly according to the gifts he gives (Romans 12:6-7). True beauty and worth flow from reverence for the Lord and the hidden character he produces (1 Peter 3:3-4; Proverbs 31:30).
