The Bible presents breaking bread as both ordinary table fellowship and, especially, Christ’s appointed memorial meal in which believers remember His saving death and share in communion with Him and one another. At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body,” commanding His disciples to do this in remembrance of Him (Luke 22:19; Matthew 26:26; 1 Corinthians 11:24). The early church devoted itself to this practice in homes and gathered worship (Acts 2:42, 46; Acts 20:7).
